Water is one of the most important things on earth. Every living thing needs water for its survival. Without water, plants, animals, microbes – everything, will perish.
Our bodies are composed of about 75% water. So we are literally walking bags of water. Water allows our blood to flow through the blood vessels thus supplying the body with vital nutrients. Also water allows waste matter to be eliminated from the body via the excretory system. Our need for water becomes very apparent when we are thirsty. The taste of water going down the throat is something we all find so much pleasure in. We drink glasses of this precious transparent liquid every day. It is vital to our life.
Water is used for drinking, washing, cleaning and just about any activity we care to do. Without water, living is virtually impossible.
Drinking water is just that water that is intended for drinking. It is safe for human consumption and comes from a municipal source. There are no added ingredients besides what is considered usual and safe for any tap water, such as fluoride.
Spring water is ground water that flows independently or by a pump or well to a surface opening. In other words, a spring is a concentrated discharge of ground water to the surface. Ground water flows through aquifers from certain recharge areas on uplands where it is replenished by rainfall and snow to discharge areas in valleys so that it flows to the surface into streams and rivers. The water flowing from this recharge area has energy acquired from the higher elevation of that area. This gravitational energy forces the water to move through the aquifer. Mostly, the energy is used up by the time the ground water becomes a stream.
Spring water can be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground spring. External force may sometimes be used to collect the spring water but this must be from the same underground stratum as the spring and must have all the physical properties, composition and quality before treatment.
Treatment for spring water is similar to that used for tap water. The water is treated to control any microbiological or chemical hazards of the raw water, and to provide consumers with clear, taste-and-odor free, colorless product. The water undergoes a minimum of filtration and disinfections by either ozone or UV light. Other treatment processes, such as reverse osmosis, UV, ozone or activated carbon filtration can also be used to remove minerals and trace organic chemicals. All the bottles undergo an internal, external wash before being filled with spring water.
Purified water is water that comes from any source, but has been purified to remove any chemicals or contaminants. Types of purification include distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis, and carbon filtration. Like distilled water, it has its advantages and disadvantages, the advantages being that potentially harmful chemicals may be taken out and the disadvantage being that beneficial minerals may be taken out as well.
Using water purification at home is probably the best thing you can do to improve the quality and longevity of your life. Drinking pure, healthy water is important on so many levels, and it’s used in virtually every function of the body. More importantly, a water purification system at home will filter out all the harmful chemicals, cysts, chlorine, lead, and other contaminants that end up in every glass of water you drink.
1. DISTILLED WATER
Distilled water is a type of purified water. It’s water that has gone through a rigorous filtration process to strip it not only of contaminants, but any natural minerals as well. This water is best for use in small appliances – like hot water urns, or steam irons, because if you use it, you won’t have that mineral buildup that you often get when you use tap water. Though it may seem counterintuitive, this water is not necessarily the best for human consumption, since all of the water’s natural, and often beneficial, minerals are absent. What is distilled pure water? It is a type of water run through distillation process. That is water boiled to steam and then allowed to condense. The condensing water is then collected into a reservoir. The process borrows the natural process of water cycle but is carried out under strict supervision to ensure it is of high quality.
Distillation can virtually remove all contaminants, including minerals and dissolved solids, rendering it demineralized. Water undergoes boiling and during this stage microorganisms are killed, and since bacteria and viruses are organic solids, they are left during the process. However, volatile organic compounds cannot be removed by distillation because their boiling points are below that of water. To remove these contaminants, other processes should be carried out. For instance, some manufacturers employ carbon filtration. Some folks are saying that there is some danger regarding distilled drinking water because of the absence of minerals in it, but don’t believe these myths because drinking water does not supply your body of minerals. You get the minerals from food. As a matter of fact, drinking pure water can help the body get rid of toxins and waste more efficiently than plain water. Distillation removes more contaminants as compared to deionization which only removes ions. However, water produced through distillation has higher quality.
2. REVERSE OSMOSIS FILTERED WATER
Reverse osmosis water is water that has been subjected to a specific filtering process. This process is often done by GE reverse osmosis filters. These filters use the process to create water that is cleaner than standard tap water, resulting in GE reverse osmosis water that has been stripped of foreign particles that existed.
The reverse osmosis process is one that sends water at high pressure through a reverse osmosis membrane. That membrane is designed to leave the water with no particles in it that are larger than the water particles. The resulting GE reverse osmosis water is certainly cleaner than tap water, but it is not necessarily clean. The water still may have a great deal of potentially harmful contaminants in it.
Because the water is sent through the kind of filter that it is, there are a number of contaminants that easily go through the filter’s membranes. GE reverse osmosis filters allow anything that is smaller than water to easily pass through. This leaves water that still contains any number of tiny toxin particles.
Unfortunately, many of the particles that are filtered out are actually beneficial when consumed in drinking water. The minerals that are so important to the human diet are often filtered out along with the large-particle toxins. This leaves behind water that is stripped of its naturally beneficial elements but still may have unhealthy contaminants.
The toxins that can be removed by the filters include rust, chlorine and some pharmaceuticals. However, the system cannot remove all of them. Their levels will be reduced, but they can’t be completely eliminated by these systems. This means that the water left behind is not as clean as many residential buyers are lead to believe.
Because of this side effect of GE reverse osmosis filters, it is generally not advisable to use these filters for residential drinking water. The water can leave a nutritional gap in the diet of anyone who gets many of their necessary minerals through their water. This can then lead to mineral deficiencies. Mineral dietary supplements are sometimes taken to replace these lost minerals, but they have been found to be less effective than getting those substances naturally in the diet.
3. CARBON FILTERS
Regardless of the process or the technology behind it, the main purpose of these devices is to produce the cleanest, purest, healthiest water possible. The most commonly used method for cleaning up tap water is the carbon block filter which removes the water’s bad taste, smell, chlorine, nitrates and many chemicals. It is indeed the most economical form of water treatment available; however, it comes with several serious drawbacks.
- It does not remove all chemicals present;
- Chemicals can build up in the filter to dangerous concentrations which end up in your body if you don’t change the filter regularly;
- A carbon filter is a breeding ground for bacteria and germs;
- The filter can develop channeling from water taking a path of least resistance, therefore, unfiltered water can pass straight through the filter unobstructed.
